“And then there are the drifters, the wanderers, the ones that float away on wind and water, carried by the currents to distant lands, to far shores, to worlds unimaginably alien and strange…” (from “We Are Made to Bloom”)
Mending: Work Updates
I’m almost fully recovered from surgery and starting to dip back into editing work. I’ll be available for consultations again starting next week, and I have editing slots opening in October. Get in touch to find out more.
Magic: “We Are Made to Bloom”
My new short fantasy is now live with Uncharted Magazine, and I’ve already gotten some lovely feedback from readers. This short story about a girl whose mother came from another world and her search for home and family spilled out of me over the course of three days toward the end of the pandemic.
Submitting it, however, was a bit of a longer journey. This piece got shortlisted so many times, but never quite managed to sell until I sent it to Uncharted. I was elated to find their acceptance in my inbox, and the editorial team has been great about sharing the story with their audience.
Here’s a brief preview:
You can read the full story over on the Uncharted website. If you give it a look, I’d love to know what you think.
Murder: Coming Soon
In other news, you are cordially invited to join an upcoming webfiction project soon going live on Substack. For those of you interested in gothic fiction, haunted houses, family secrets, and forbidden magic, your invitation is below.
Quick Writing Tip
Struggling to answer the perennial question: “What’s your book about?” Narrow down your premise by thinking about 1) your main character; 2) their goals; 3) the inciting incident or hook; and 4) the central conflict. More on this in the next newsletter.
I hope all of you are keeping healthy and safe. If you enjoyed this brief peek into the writing life and know someone you think would love it too, I’d really appreciate if you shared it with them. Until next time!
